I get asked all the time, “Juliana, how do I get my work seen!?” and my reply is always the same – GREAT PHOTOS! But stunning imagery is just the first step to stationery success; what you do with those great photos will make or break your business.
Social media is all about visuals and nowhere on the internet is more visual than Pinterest. According to Pinterest, it is “a visual discovery engine for finding ideas like recipes, home and style inspiration, and more”…or more simply put. think of Pinterest as a visual google. Users can search for anything they want with just a few keywords and see thousands of ideas that fit what they’re looking for.
What’s so great about Pinterest for small businesses is that users don’t typically search by brand, which puts all businesses on an equal playing field. A person searching for “beach wedding invitations” or “monogram thank you cards” is just as likely to find you as they are a design from Minted or another big retailer…that is, if you’re doing it right.
Best Practices for Pinterest Success
Pick a vertical image
Use high-resolution, vertical images. Pinterest recommends a 2:3 (1000×1500 pixel) aspect ratio. While you certainly can pin other sizes, longer pins may truncate and other rations may negatively impact performance.
Make your brand the focal point
One of the most common mistakes I see is not including your brand in your pin! Put a logo on every Pin you create, ideally top center. Avoid the lower-right corner since that spot will be covered by the Pinterest product icon that is added automatically to shoppable posts.
Optimize your Pin copy
Clear titles and descriptions help you Pin be found by the right people. Pinterest is not a place for witty puns or funny hashtags. Create a title with searchable keywords and do the same in your description, remember to put your business front and center by putting your business name in the first sentence. For example “Custom beach wedding invitations by XYZ Paper” is a perfect way to start off your description. Remember, you can use up to 100 characters for your title and up to 500 characters for your description. Use them! Just be sure the most relevant information is at the top with a call to action (like, “shop here” or “learn more about creating your dream suite”) and link to the appropriate page on your website.
You’re just a pin away from stationery success!
