There are so many pieces that need to come together to create a beautiful flatlay, but it all starts with a strong foundation- the styling surface!
Selecting the right backdrop sets the aesthetic and tone for your shoot, and can absolutely make or break your final images.
When deciding on a backdrop, consider the mood you are trying to evoke. Clean and modern? Then a matte color or faux stone might be right for you. Fine-art? Try linen, suede, or a hand-painted surface. Moody cottagecore? Try wood or linen.
Don’t be afraid to think out of the box! I’ve seen gorgeous results using wallpaper, antique rug remnants, velvet, and more. Just remember to keep your products front and center – the right styling surface should enhance (not distract) from what you want to showcase.
For linen, suede, and velvet surfaces I love Locust Collection
For hand-painted surfaces, checkout Lindale Studios
For wood, cement, and painted surfaces try Erickson Surfaces
