Product Styling & Photography: Does it Really Matter?
Over the last year of business, I’m repeatedly surprised by two things:
The number of stationers who delay getting high quality pictures of the work
The (almost overnight) impact high quality pictures have on sales
It feels like a luxury, right? Professionally styled and photographed images can cost thousands and, if you’re just starting out, that price tag can be a little hard to swallow. Especially when it’s being spent on something like a nice photo…we all know it would be nice to have, but it would also be nice to have a shopping spree at Anthropologie. And just because something is nice to have, doesn’t mean I should do it.
But there’s a big difference between shopping spree at Anthro and investing in your product photography. And it’s not just a difference of one is personal and one is business…the real difference is the return on investment.
Great product photography is essential for convincing people to buy your products.
90% of online buyers say that a quality photo is the most important factor in an online sale.
And I’m not just talking for fancy boutiques or big e-commerce businesses.
Etsy found that the quality of images was the most important factor in an online sale for 90% of its users!
Whether you sell on Etsy, another platform, or your own website, having beautifully styled and photographed images of your work is critical to success.
Not only are good photos essential, a bad photo could prevent you from making a sale, no matter how amazing your product is.
Think about the last time you were shopping online and came across a bad product photo. Maybe the image was dark or out of focus. (“What exactly is this item?” you wondered.) Maybe you couldn’t figure out how large the product actually was in real life. Or you weren’t sure if the color was right. Maybe you couldn’t even tell what was for sale. (“Is it one of these things?” you asked yourself. “All of them?”)
Odds are, you did not buy that item.
Good product photography gets us excited about the role the product will play in our lives; for wedding stationers, that means stirring up all those wedding day dreams and feelings so your work becomes an integral part of the couple’s vision.
Unlike shopping at a mall where customers can hold and touch products, all we have online are photographs.
According to a study made by BigCommerce, 78% of online shoppers want photographs to bring products to life. Shoppers want to see a product as if it was part of their lives.
I’ve seen it happen time and again for my clients; after using images from the Styled Stock Shop or investing in custom photography, their return on investment is almost immediate.
Clients share with me everyday how
they went from 2 inquiries per day to 20 inquiries per day,
they’re booking 300% more clients than before,
they received 4 new inquiries after months of nothing but crickets
they booked dream clients who want all the extras
they’ve been featured by Etsy
their Pinterest clickthrough rate increased by 10% within one month
Each of my clients can draw a direct line between using their new imagery and increasing their sales.
If you’re ready to grow your business, increase your sales, and have successes like my past clients, now is a great time to invest in your photography.
